Could we possibly just have an option that allowed the user to choose between
whether or not choosing File->Close on the last document exited the program
or opened a new untitled document in that window? While the MDI vs. SDI
question isn't resolved by this, it seems that it might be something of a
compromise between keeping our current behavior and doing something that
would make the users who prefer MDI more comfortable. It would seem that
different people have different expectations with regards to what closing the
last window should do, and that one of those two options should work for just
about everyone, so why not have it be something that can be set once in
the "Preferences" menu and then forgotten about? Everyone could then argue
over what the default should be, of course, but that's a much more minor
problem.
