So, if I may summarize:
* Either you use the `normal' Makefiles which come with AbiWord. If so,
you need a Unix-like environment (because many Unix commands are
used in the Makefiles). If you use these Makefiles, you can also use
autoconf (it needs about the same set of Unix commands)
* Alternatively, you use another build system. Such build systems
are specific for a certain architecture/OS. In those cases, it is
not difficult to figure out what the autoconf-settings should be
for your architecture/OS, create the right config.h file and
(depending on the use of autoconf) other substitutions, and
adapt it to your own build system. That is, it is not much more
difficult than analyzing Makefiles, and may even be a lot easier.
So, unless I have simplified this too much, I really don't see any
objection to using autoconf. Granted, it won't work for platforms which
are radically non-Unix-like, but then, the rest of the Makefiles won't
work either, so you have your work cut out anyway.
