First of all, I don't think that the current
implementation -- preview in the dialog -- is broken.
It's just fine. But the ability to preview the changes
in the document would be useful, for the reasons that I
cited earlier. Applying the changes and then undoing
them if you don't like the result is a workaround, but
it's not convenient. I often need to tweak a style
several times before getting it just right. I also may
make changes to several related styles (e.g., the
headings and the paragraph styles that follow) at once.

Now that I think about it, the Preview button should be
available at all levels of the Style dialog. The first
dialog is where you start and end up when you define or
edit one or more styles. All of the changes (i.e., font
attributes, paragraphs attributes, etc.) have been made
and you can only preview the effect of the whole.
Therefore, if you do not like the font size, you must
edit the style again, which brings up another dialog. A
preview button here would preview atomic changes.

Once again, I don't think anything is broken. I'm just
writing as a user about a feature that would be of use
to me. I have no idea of how difficult it would be to
implement, and I know that mine is not the only opinion
that matters. I avoid sentence constructs like, "I
think we should have a Preview button here," when I'm
writing. It's visual clutter and unneccessary. So take
it for granted that when I write, "There should be a
Preview button here," that's just my opinion.
