It certainly did try to use gcc. Which made me surprised that
__attribute__ was an error. Without autoconf et al it uses
MSVC.

gcc works beautifully on Windows as far as I am aware. I've heard
that one problem is a resource compiler. But I'd still prefer to
use gcc for code and MS's resource compiler only. In a perfect
world we would also be able to use Borland's compiler - especially
since there are freely downloadable versions now.

I only have MSVC because I've been a professional Windows programmer
on occasion. But I'm not a Windows man either. I am impressed with
Windows 2000's and Word's multilingual capabilities which is why
I'm working hard on a free competitor.

CygWin/gcc is a good stepping stone between Windows and Linux
and so is AbiWord. I hope they can become a team (:
