No, the italics should stay, if, and only if, they are the result of
manual formatting; if, however, the italics in the paragraph are there
because before you applied "german" to it was formatted with a
style called "german-italics" which had italics in its definition, then
the italics should be removed. I think with the changes I have
committed earlier today it works this way.
