I like xchat for a a nice GUI interface to irc and bitchX for a useful
command line irc client.

Commands to irc are prefaced with a "/"

Useful commands after firing up irc are:

/connect irc.gnome.org
/join #abiword
/me "Text goes here" Useful for third person comments about yourself :-)
