I understand your point of view, and agree that it proba bly should be
an option in unix as well, however this should be the default because
of: read below

Abiword is consistent feature wise in every platform, but it also is a
native application in every platform. Therefore, behaviour that is
standard in one platform should be respected and implemented in a
compliant form.

Thus, the unix style of copy & paste should be on by default in unix
builds.

But the halfway implementation that is currently done is even worse than
opting to do just one of them, which would be horrible by itself.
