No, you are probably not the only one who clicked No on save. However, I
don't want to clutter up my directories with hundreds of extra .bak
files to cover that one time I might click No. Exiting without saving
deserves a (self-administered) dope slap and a retype.

Having said that, maybe, just maybe, Abi could keep its last autosaved
document and delete it when Abi opens the second time. For instance:

AbiWord exits without saving, autosaves doc and tracks it
Abiword opens, tracks 1 autosaved doc, leaves it alone
You could still retrieve your unsaved doc
Abiword exits having saved, autosaves doc anyway and tracks it
AbiWord opens, tracks 2 autosaved docs, deletes the older one
You have lost your unsaved document

If you clicked nowithout saving in this instance, then you would have 1
(and only one) more chance to open AbiWord and open the last autosaved
document. You would always have your last document backed up, saved or
not, but only your last document.

Just an idea, and not necessarily a good one, but one I thought I'd
throw out.

(For the developers)
It would require autosave keeping the last two recent file.bak locations
and deleting the second one. It wouldn't have to care if either of the
files were there to delete.
It would give users a chance to recover after even the most dopey
behavior.

A variant could be that autosave only keeps backups of unsaved documents
and you could save it until there is another unsaved document to take
it's place
