None. GNU make with autoconf and automake.
See abi/BUILD.TXT that gives the prerequisite for building it on MacOS X, it
explain what to install and how to build it.

Lot of areas. If you are familiar with ATSUI and Quartz, that would be
great. We use Carbon for most of the Mac specific stuff.

Not. But there is a document in the source tree. See
abi/docs/MacPort_Documentation.abw

Currently I'm the maintainer of the port. F.J.F. is the XDarwin maintainer
(UNIX version for Darwin with X that works on MacOS X too). That is all.
This list is the main place to discuss that. Otherwise, we often meet by IRC
on irc.gnome.org on the #abiword channel.
