when v1.0 is released i plan to sending a few letters to various
Computer Magazines, suggesting that they put Abiword on their
coverdisks.

It is tucows policy not to host beta software, and as Abiword has not
yet had an "official stable realease" it is technically ineligable. I
have a strong feeling that Abiword is already available on Tucows, and
if so then it may as well be the current version.

Im sure it wont be too hard to find sites, the real trick is to get them
to join the announce list and actually keep reasonably up to date.
