So last night, I had the pleasure of talking with Bart Decrem again (I
always love talking with Bart) for about 45 minutes to an hour. We
talked about a lot of things, but mainly about:
*) The future of OpenOffice and the benefits gained by sharing in their
successes
*) The future of Hancom
*) Collaboration between our two organizations
And I have to say that the talk was largely productive. Bart now
believes that he has a course of action to propose to his employers.
Hancom will be working with us to help open up their file format. They
have a 200 page document describing their format, but unfortunately, it
is mostly in Korean. If there is someone who wants to translate that
into English, you'd be doing us a huge favor. Hancom has also given me
access to their FTP site and several license-keys for their product, and
I have an open offer to see some internals of the product, which I have
declined to use for the moment.
On our part, I'd like to get us at least to read the Hancom format in
short order. Ideally, we will be able to write it too. It would help out
both of our projects greatly to do this. Once Jody (gnumeric maintainer)
finishes up some work on the CompoundDocument library (OLE2 and
OpenOffice JAR format reading & writing library), I commit myself to
improving AbiWord's OpenOffice support so that it is on-par with our ABW
and RTF support.
There are other details which I am purposefully excluding here, and I
will release them at a later time when I feel it is appropriate.
If you are interested in working on a HancomWord import/export filter,
please contact me directly off-list and I will do my best to help you
out.
Cheers,
Dom
