working spacebar and enter key (but not tab)

redraw seems to be working again after more of a recompile (so rulers are
back).

I included instructions on how tab might be made to work; the event is
intercepted before we even get a chance to look at it.

Now I'm going to school; tonight I'm going to try to make redraw events
get sent to the appropriate window.
