No. Xft is a library build on top of XRender (or pure
Xlib if the server doesn't have XRender). fontconfig
is a library (no special link with X) that, in short,
helps managing fonts. Its functionality was mixed
with the old Xft1, and it has been splitted in the new
release.
RedHat has just been the first distro upgrading to
fontconfig (Owen has been fixing the hell to have
everything working for rh8), others will follow.

I guess that defoma is some kind of "meta"-script.
There are a lot of them out there, but they're now
kind of obsolete.

did you really tried the xft enabled version of
AbiWord? If you fill a bug, please specify what
version are you using (not only the number, but also
the compilation options used).
