Some status bar fixes..

Status bar fixes/cleanups:
- Page count now displays (wasn't updated views)
- Removed bogus 'character padding' hack entirely (note to self: never
be so cavalier about encodings ever again)
- Some renaming of internal classes for more consistency
- Removed bogus/deprecated comments
