    Something has to know how far to draw the red squiggle on the screen. I
    believe that right now that is calculated using the fl_BlockLayout char
    width cache. In any case I'm asking Tomas to check before removing it.

    He may well come up with a better solution. He usually does:-)

    Ah while I think of it check that zooming will still work.
