I don't do (please remember that English isn't my native language). I just
wanted to clear up that these strings aren't useless, but valid translations
(although currently unused) which is the reason why they have to be valid
(i.e. have to have an unique msgid) which should answer your question why
msgmerge chokes on them if they aren't unique. I'm not meaning to offend you,
just passing information.
