In the past, I have used Xfig to do some simple figures, but I haven't
been terribly impressed with it because its features don't map onto my
needs very well and it isn't cross platform, so I am a bit hesitant to
work on embedding xfig files directly. I did a bit of research, and I
found PGML. (http://www.w3.org/TR/1998/NOTE-PGML). It seems fairly
nice. It's an XML format and it's based on the postscript imaging
model, and it looks nice. I don't know what programs support it, but
it looks like it might be fairly easy to either change vector drawing
programs to output PGML or to convert from other formats to PGML. But
I didn't find any existing free source code which deals with it.
So, I'm thinking about writing some code to allow AbiWord to embed
PGML graphics. But I thought it might be good to discuss it on the
list first. Specifically:
* Does anyone who has more vector graphics experience than I do think
I should focus my time on some other format? What do
desktop-publishing people commonly use for vector graphics?
* Is anyone else working on embedding vector graphics in AbiWord?
* Is there any existing free program which deals with PGML?
* Anything else?
