sounds like it might be a permissions problem. the fact that
you can run it as root and everything seems to work ok, but
you can't run it as yourself, would make me wonder if all of
the permissions on the various theme files is ok....

i've not seen this one before, so i'm just guessing....

Well, I run a gnome environment as user torsten. I installed the static
binary as root, so it would go in /usr/local/AbiSuite.
