Actually, what is happening is that it is switching the X-server to a
"private
colormap". It is still 256 colors, just a _different_ 256 colors.

I think what is happening is that AbiWord is telling the X-server to use a
pallette of colors that is ideally suited to the AbiWord display. Meanwhile,
all of the other programs which were working with the old pallette look wierd
in the new pallette.

I think there is (or should be) a command-line option to AbiWord which forces
it to use the "system colormap"

Seeing as you have a pretty decent video-card, I can't imagine why you'd want
to run at 8bpp. I think with XFree 3.3.6, you should have no problem running
X on this card at 32 or 16 bpp.
