~ is shorthand for your home directory (/root/ for user root - /home/joe/
for user Joe). If you type "cd" by itself you will be taken to your home
directory (~), then type 'cat .xsession-errors'.

Many others lately with Redhat/Mandrake and the RPM version of
Abiword had the same problem. They had to uninstall the RPM version
and download and install the binary version of abiword.
