This is not something anyone is familiar with, but here are a couple things
to try. First, you might want to run the GTK version of AbiWord and see if
the backspace key does something different. There should not be any
difference between AbiWord under GNOME and the standard GTK version, but
you never know. Additionally, you can grab a copy of xkeycaps and check
out what backspace is mapped to. That might provide some clues as to what
is happening.
