I have exactly the same problem. I'm running Debian 2.0. I've played around with
the wrapper script, manually changed environment variables, etc, with no effect.
I'm also using the static version of the 0.7.9 binary.

When started as an ordinary user, the above GLib-WARNING message appears along
with the dialog window that Simon mentions. The splash screen comes up, then
goes away, but no program window appears. When the dialog window is cleared the
command prompt reappears.

When started as root the same GLib-WARNING message appears at the command line,
but the program comes up okay and there is no dialog window.
