Thankyou, Tim, this actually worked. The tar file downloaded and seemed
to install correctly.

Now when I run abiword as

prompt> abiword &

as root or standard user, I get the error

Gdk-WARNING**: locale not supported by C library.

and the Abiword_s process spins without limit.

I check both $LC_ALL and $LANG and found them to be blank (undefined) in
my shell. I suspect this is the source of the error. What should these
environment variables be set as?
