John,
You are right, but the original plan for Abi was to eventually become an
office suite. Currently that seems way off in the future, and, also, to
some extent Abi is adopting / being adopted by GNOME, which already has
Gnumeric as a spreadsheet. Still that is not cross platform. I think
sooner or later this will happen,
and it will be sooner most likely only if a new group of developer's
materializes. Nevertheless, if users put some effort into defining what
they'd like to have, especially if it is along the lines of a "new
paradigm" which might excite developer's and others at the thought of
taking the lead in office suite development, the developer's may
materialize sooner than you think.
I am sure that sooner or later, a central database (or more than one)
will be the paradigm for an office suite, and it will deal with both
structured and free format database. Will it occur 50 years from now or
sooner? Will it occur before or after keyboard input is replaced (or
almost replaced) by voice recognition (or human-machine telepathy
(wireless links) ;-)? I don't know, but I'm sure it will happen.
