Much as i like Abiword, Have you tried Open Office? (StarOffice is related
    to Open Office).
It has an equation editor and i expect it can handle embedded maths
objects, I dont think it does LaTeX though.

I tried the latest stable release of Open Office on an
    Athlon 1 Ghz on Win98 a few days ago. It's MSWord97
import was definitely NOT up to scratch and it was buggy. Not for 'normal' users yet.

Rather than making a front end to LaTeX, LyX might be suitable for your
needs. It is well worth your while searching for existing (La)TeX based
programs before writing your own frontend.

I tried LyX before. It was beyond me. Please note that I
have used LaTeX before quite successfully. I really don't
expect my non-technical friend to understand (or want to
understand) LyX either ;) That's my reason for the custom
    front-end to LaTeX.

As for WordPerfect support i dont know how much the file format has
changed for WordPerfect 2000 but abiword does have some support for WordPerfect 6 & 7
so you should ask the guy who wrote the importer really nicely, but
dont expect handling embedded math objects anytime soon.

    Thanks, I'll look into it.
