to answer another question:
abiword does not _require_ any registry settings

two essays on the same subject

its a matter of style and ingredients and the person making it. you get
the idea.
disk space is cheap, and time spent cramming abiword onto small spaces
might mean that other work does not get done. The developers do care about size,
but its lower on the list of priorities.
if size was absolutely essential you could get someone to compile your own
version of abiword, and you could leave out or disable lots of features.
At the moment to get abiword onto a floppy you have to lose some features,
particularly the spell checker dictionary.
Im going to look into compressing the installer using UPX but even if
that gets the size small enough for a floppy then it would still be a pain
to integrate it into the build system. Hopefully ill have time to try a
few things over the next few hours and report back with some results.

Thats capitalism for you, no money no market.
perhaps if a bunch of people banded together for the greater good etc etc.
ill spare you the speech about software Freedom.
