Carl,
You shouldn't have to remove the old directory. Can you post the
several lines before the "make: *** Error 1 line?" Look for something
like, "gcc: blah, blah in file: ./include/someheaderfile.h blah, blah,
blah"
You can install the rpm if you want to. It will just overwrite the
old executable. If you want to remove the old files, just do "slocate
Abisuite" or "slocate Abiword" to find out where they are (probably in
/usr/share or /usr/local/share) and remove them first.
