On most major distributions of Linux (ie Mandrake), AbiWord is pre-compiled
(which means that it's already loaded to operate with the particular distro).

When people write of problems loading Abi in Linux, usually they're trying
to install the latest/greatest version, which may require more
troubleshooting than if a later version was provided by the company that
produces the distro (which is usually later than the Abi release, or in the
next version of that distro). The reason for these problems deals with the
fact that Abi depends upon particular shared libraries, the location of which
may vary from Linux distro to Linux distro.

It isn't as much of a toil as it may seem.

As for Linux vs. Windows...well, it sounds like you're curious enough to
try it, in which case I'd recommend you do. If you'd like suggestions,
contact me privately. I've been using Linux (Slack and Mandrake) for a
year-and-a-half...no regrets.
