Aha, the key bit of information needed to solve this problem. This is
definately documented somewhere, if you search the abiword website
for the error message it should turn up
    google: site:abisource.com "error message"

(i compiled from scratch once myself but got bored at this point and
instead used the older preinstalled version, i was using a remote
xsesion. i vaguely remember something about having to setup XFS x font
    server)
    setting up fonts, yuck.

the download page is a tricky beast, what you get is not all there is
    to see.

i was thinking about make install, probably should have mentioned it in my
    previous mail, it is important.

Did you try the RPMs for Redhat Linux 7.3? I dont promise they will work
with 7.1 but it is worth a try (might be a few dependancies like libgal
and stuff). Also if you use Ximian redcarpet they also provide up to date
nicely packaged binaries, but late for that now that you have sucessfully
    compiled abiword.

A good suggestion, feel free to get involved, submit a patch to the
documentation and or file the suggeston (ask nicely) in bugzilla or maybe
get in contact with the developers.

    Hope that helps
