    french.hash and
    french.hash.affix probably

    try putting them in the same directory as the american.hash

    .hash dictionaries (ispell) are entirely different from .dic dictionaries
    (text files, with user added words, usually added to when you click Add
    in the spellchecker)

    that might not help on Linux but it is worth trying while you wait for a
    better response
