    For #1, you need to change the "normal" template. Go to Format, then Style.
    After you make changes, you need to Save As an AbiWord Template. The
    "normal" template is in a folder within the AbiWord folder in your Program
    Files. I find that to get it to save, I need to click on the already
    existing template name "normal." Just typing the name doesn't do the trick.

    For #2, you need to edit your AbiWord Profile, which resides in the AbiSuite
    folder within Windows. Open it with Notepad when AbiWord is not running.
    Add stuff to the Custom format towards the end of the file, like so

    DefaultSaveFormat=".rtf"

    Then save the Profile. You can change other stuff this way too (I have Zoom
    set to Width, instead of 100%).

    Michael
