Some time ago I had a similar problem (in fonts/ISO-8559-8, the file
fonts.dir was modified and its length became 2). Tomas Frydrych suggested
to make a copy of fonts.dir as fonts.scale,
cp fonts.dir fonts.scale
and since then it never happened again.
