This is a known bug with gucharmap. It is not an AbiWord bug.
Abiword freezes if I try "Insert Symbol"
http://bugzilla.abisource.com/show_bug.cgi?id=6124
Insert => Symbol freezes X-session in gtk-Abiword with gucharmap support
http://bugzilla.abisource.com/show_bug.cgi?id=6095
Both 6124 and 6095 are duplicates of 5555 "embedded gucharmap freezes"
http://bugzilla.abisource.com/show_bug.cgi?id=5555
Advice from bug 5555 on how to fix this:
"just use a newish gucharmap. configure --disable-gucharmap if it bothers
you that much."
Cheers - Stephen.
