Depending on where you got AbiWord from, it could use
any of the following spell-checkers Ispell to
spell-check Spanish:
Ispell (most probable):

Myspell: http://es.openoffice.org/
There was a bug in our Ispell support that Jordi Mas
just fixed. This would have stopped Spanish and
Catalan from working entirely correctly. It will be
fixed in our next release.
