I think someone changed something in STABLE shortly after 1.0, I'm not
sure, but AbiWord doesn't seem to respond to changes in LANG. There is a
bug related to this... With the latest XAbiWord release I had to edit the
source code to re-enable this feature.

Do you build AbiWord from source?
