I had a similar problem. I use Debian and when I changed the settings
and run Abiword The page was stationary but the frames were jumpy. We
finally discovered that my new settings file owner was correct, the
group was a nonexisting one. So Abiword was having difficulty trying to
read a file witout permission. When we changed the group to the correct
group problem solved.
