I'm jumping into this conversation a bit late, but here's my experiences
with footnotes.
This past summer I spent a bit of time attempting to write a term paper
in AbiWord (version 1.9-something-or-other on Debian). I had a few
problems.
The main problem I had was that after a few pages of text and footnotes,
the number would mess up. I would start getting duplicate numbers. All of
a sudden, entering my 8th footnote (for example), it would get numbered
"1" and appear on the first page. Or it would get numbered "4" and appear
below the previous number 4. I couldn't figure out any pattern, and I
didn't have time to fight with it.
One workaround I found was exporting it as RTF and then reloading it.
This seemed to cause all the footnotes to get renumbered and resorted. It
wasn't ideal, but it did help.
That was the main thing. I hope to get some time soon to see if this
behavior still happens and to fill out some bug reports if I can find any
patterns.
Apart from this issue, I would use AbiWord for my major papers. It may
work now (with v2.0.1 out), but I haven't had time to test it again.
