Guess what ? For 10 yrs of UNIX I have been able to install most
software as a simple users. AbiWord is being one of them. I myself did
it on a Solaris (I did not want to mess up the system so I did not
install it while being root).
BTW, a UNIX system without root user is impossible (but I can believe
that you don't have root credential yourself).
