I had a similar problem, and all those who know what they are doing are
welcome to tell me what a jerk I was, but I solved those similar problems by
doing this:
   I found (Linux) a root-owned normal.awt. So I copied it to normal.awt-was
and opened abi and arranged all my settings and saved it, and copied the result
to the root-owned normal.awt. Surely it shouldn't have worked, but amazingly
it did, and I start with exactly what I wanted.
I know I was bad, and it's kind of insane, and maybe it wouldn't work for
anyone else, but it was the only way I found to solve this problem.
Maybe some derisive comments (at me) would help everyone to illuminate this
issue? Have at it.
   PS, Abi is great.
