I strongly recommend you and everyone else use the Gnome version of
Abiword if at all possible and make sure that gnome-print support is
enabled. You say you are already using Gnome so it doesn't sound like
that should be a problem for you. It will make your life a lot easier and
avoid a load of potential problems (so much so that the developers have
been seriously considering including gnome-print in the GTK build as it no
longer strictly requires Gnome).

If you are already using the Gnome version of Abiword please provide some
specific error messages, blame Debian for being difficult and check
bugzilla to see if any similar reports exists. (Okay so you dont have to
blame Debian but it makes me feel better if you do, they never claimed to
be the most user friendly distribution.)
