What version of abiword are you using and on what Operating System?
(I'm guessing Windows, and I'm hoping you are using the latest version of
Abiword.)

There are some known issues with defaulting to Time New Roman and there
were very old issues with the infrastructure which were decpetively
difficult to fix. If you take the time to search through our bug tracker
you might be able to find the relevant issue.

What do you mean symbols? (Okay so you do explain this later)

Where can we find a standard reference listing all the symbols used?
(Please provide a link if you can.)

Very odd. I have seen systems which use _underlines_ /italics/ and *bold*
markup and abiword even includes an exporter for that kind of Human
Readable ASCII markup (see the extra plugins) but we do not currently
include any kind of an importer for that. It would not be impossible to
add such an importer but there has never been much demand for it and no
developers have volunteered to do it but if someone was willing to do the
work and write the neccessary code I think it would be accepted.

Thanks for choosing abiword.
