It is a feature of Microsoft Windows and it really has nothing to do with
Abiword.
Right clicking on a shortcut (like the one usually on the desktop, or in
the start menu) will show you a menu and there should be an item labelled
Properties.
In that dialog there is an option to start maximised
(I dont have windows here but if you search the mailing list archive you
might be able to find where i explained it before. Again I'd appreciate
if someone helped out and added this to the FAQ, especially if someone
could provide detailed instructions including screenshots. Any use can
get involved and help us out, please do.)
