The normal.awt file is simply a template for the default document. It
can be opened and the "Normal" style within it edited in AbiWord - there
is usually no need for a text editor. "Sum1"'s instructions earlier
explain how to do that.
As for the window size, that would not be stored there, since it's not
generally a property of the document (correct me if I'm wrong, devs).
The most likely place for that would be the AbiWord.Profile file in the
.abisuite2 (or similar) directory in your home folder (not sure where it
is placed in Mac OS X). It may be that there is a bug regarding window
size recall on Mac OS X, please check bugzilla.abisource.com, and file
it if it does not exist.
