Thanks to everyone. I got it fixed.

I recalled having this same issue when I first loaded
Abiword. In fact, the same issue comes up in KWord
too, but not in OpenOffice Writer.

I believe that I fixed the issue by "apt-get install
aspell" I also had done "apt-get install aspell-en"
like Marc had suggested since it was one of the
recommended packages.

After closing Abiword and opening then trying to type
a few words (another suggestion from this list) it
still remained grayed out. Yes, the option in the menu
was also grayed out. Yes, I also had checked the
preferences to make sure those were on under spell
checking. So I had already done everything suggested
on the list, but still no spell check.

So I decided to shut down and take up the matter in
the morning again. Well, low and behold, a when I
booted up and started Abiword it worked. Now I
normally don't reboot to fix Linux problems. I also am
amazed that a reboot did anything to fix the issue.
Usually in Debian, I install the correct package, and
it just starts working. This reminded me of the
Install messages you get with Windows XP. "Please
reboot your computer now to finish the installation."
Perhaps Debian needs to issue that message after
certain installs. I don't quite understand why Debian
does not make aspell one of Abiword's dependencies
since it is needed for full functionality. Or they
could at least put it down as a recommended package
when you do an Abiword install.

Thanks again for the suggestions. I know none of them
fixed the issue, but since no one suggested a reboot,
I guess this is perhaps a surprise to you as it is to
me.
