In this case being able to link to external images rather than embedding
them directly would also solve the users stated problems and it might be
easier to implement

I am sure OpenOffice.org would be better than Abiword in this specific
case. In OpenOffice the original JPEGS are stored within the JAR/ZIP in a
Pictures/ subdirectory (unzip an OpenOffice document and see for
yourself). Not only do they avoid the penalty of coverting from JPEG to
PNG they also aviod the small amount of extra bloat from converting binary
to base64 encoded text.

Using ZABW is nonetheless a very good recommendation for anyone worried
about file size.
