I think a lot of people would be happy with Microsoft Wordpad if it
actually included spell checking.

Abiword can be compressed to less than 1MB, the spellchecking dictionary
however takes up more than 2M. If a developer wanted to create an even
smaller version of Abiword it should be possible and you are welcome to
submit patches.
Also Microsoft takes advantage of things already included in the Operating
System where as Abiword carries around the infrastructure it needs.
There are lots of things abiword can do that microsoft word cannot. The
most obvious of which is that Abiword works on many operating systems,
Microsoft Word does not (Office for the mac is an entirely different
program).
