That sounds like the smooth scrolling feature. To disable it:

- Close AbiWord
- Edit your AbiWord.Profile file (look in ~/.AbiSuite/ or a similar location)
- In the custom scheme section (<Scheme name="_custom_") add
EnableSmoothScrolling="0"
