Dear Mark,

Thank you for butting in!

I'll try to describe the exact sequence.

1 I open AbiWord, up comes the default empty page with Times New
Roman 12 point.
2 I go to drop down menu Format and select "Create and Modify Styles"
3 A pane opens with a list on the left containing one entry "Normal"
below it is a dropdown menu showing "In Use" and offering "All" and
User-defined styles" I have tried all three in turn.
4 I highlight Normal in the list and click on modify.
5 Another pane drops down showing various text fields: Style name,
Style type, Based on, Style for following paragraph, Preview and
Dscription. Below is a dropdown menu marked Format, I select Font
from this and yet another pane opens with the fonts and point sizes.
I select Palatino and 14 point and click OK
6 That pane closes leaving the previous pane visible, I click OK on this pane.
7 That pane closes and I'm left with the original Styles pane in
which I click the live button marked Apply. Nothing happens.
8 I close that pane and I'm left with the open page now showing
Palatino 14 point.
9a) I close that page and open another which comes up with Times New
Roman 12 point Aaargh!!
9b) I save that page as Normal.awt in the Templates folder, replacing
the existing Normal.awt. Then I open a new page which comes up with
Times New Roman 12 point Aaargh!!

Any suggestions about what I'm doing wrong very gratefully received!

Best wishes,

David
