Okay, there may be several things to check on. I find that my install of
Abiword 2.4.6 does not have smooth scrolling set to "0" and it works
fine. But my install of 2.4.5 has that gummy scrolling unless I do have
smooth scrolling set to "0" (it may mean something that your scrolling
slows up after 10 pages; mine was acting gummy right from the first few
lines).
But until someone else jumps in with the obvious solution, try this:
Make sure that, when you modify the Profile, you are placing
enablesmoothscrolling="0" in <Scheme name = "custom" (which comes after
<Scheme name = "builtin") and not under <Select scheme = "custom"
