./configure and --enable-collab-backend-tcp

I've been trying to compile abiword 2.8.4 for a while, but I think
that the problem is in the configure script.
--enable-collab-backend-tcp does not seem to parse, or it doesn't do anything.

I'm using
./configure --prefix=/usr --build=i686-pc-linux-gnu
--host=i686-pc-linux-gnu --mandir=/usr/share/man
--infodir=/usr/share/info --datadir=/usr/share --sysconfdir=/etc
--localstatedir=/var/lib --enable-plugins= --enable-shave
--disable-static --disable-maintainer-mode --disable-default-plugins
--disable-builtin-plugins --disable-collab-backend-telepathy
--enable-clipart --enable-statusbar --enable-templates --with-gio
--without-gnomevfs --without-goffice --enable-print
--disable-collab-backend-xmpp --disable-collab-backend-tcp
--disable-collab-backend-service --enable-spell

And I get the message
configure: error: collab plugin: asio is required for the collab
plugin TCP backend, see http://think-async.com/

This seems backwards because the ./configure
--disable-collab-backend-tcp should disable that.
The only reason that I'm going through with this is because I don't
want boost. It's a massive lib that takes ages to compile. I don't
want it for some little thing like abiword. I love abiword, but I
would REALLY like to get this working... thanks.
